JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable - Chapter 1 (2017)

Given that the Diamond Is Unbreakable arc apparently constitutes Volumes 29–47 of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga, it's perhaps not surprising that this 2 hour film feels like a glimpse into a larger world... the sort of thing that probably does need 20 volumes of manga or a 150 hour RPG to develop its ideas. Yes I mean Persona.

Presumably it was aimed at an audience who are already familiar with its world, and perhaps therefore might already be invested in characters who aren't developed well enough here to care about them... Oji-san excepted.

Miike's direction is competent but lacks any particular flourishes that would mark it as uniquely his work, which can reasonably be said of much of his output in the 2010's... it feels like the work of a director for hire, not an auteur.

I'm guessing Nana Komatsu's character would have become more relevant in Chapter 2, had it been made.
