An interesting take on a familiar tale

A young girl starts learning martial arts after a run in with some bullies, 14 years later she crosses paths with a group of corrupt cops after witnessing a crime... you know where this is going. Except... it doesn't.

This should be the setup for a generic action movie revenge fantasy, an unstoppable killing machine destroys her tormentors to wreak bloody vengeance on those who wronged her - instead it is probably pretty realistic about how helpful 14 years of martial arts training really is in this situation.

It's hard to tell an original story in this day and age, but it's still possible to deliver an interesting perspective on a familiar tale by challenging familiar tropes.

Not necessarily a winning strategy though, I assume the predominantly negative reception is because people expected a hero fantasy and interpret Akira as a bad one, rather than just not a hero fantasy (I guess the "no one will be forgiven" tagline didn't help) - not to say Akira isn't a hero, she certainly is, but it's the sort of heroism that might be achievable by mere mortals like ourselves.
