Godfather Of Canton (1982)
A coolie is ofter a job as a policeman after saving a government official, and through treachery and corruption rises through the ranks of the police, then becomes a gangster.
The film vaguely resembles Boxer From Shantung, but with none of the epic melodrama, class or production values. Kuei Chih-Hung brings zero style or substance to the director's chair (as usual), and the script miserably fails to develop characters or situations. The overall feel of the film is distinctly cheap (odd that Shaw Brothers films seemed to get less polished as the years went by), with extremely pedestrian camera work.
There is one brief and anachronistic fight scene that is the only worthy use of Gordon Liu's talents, and certainly the most enjoyable part of the film. Gun fights are laughably shoddy, apart from a few individual shots that are pretty cool.
At least it's short (81 minutes on the IVL dvd), so at least it isn't too hard to get to the end without falling asleep or simply giving up and doing something else.
